Losing a loved one is never easy and when someone close to you is grieving a family member or friend, it can be hard to know how to help. While no words can fully ease the pain, there are meaningful ways to support someone through grief and provide comfort during this difficult time.

  1. Listen Without Judgement

Sometimes the most helpful thing is simply being there. Let your friend or family member express their grief, share memories, or remain silent. Avoid giving unsolicited advice — being a calm, supportive presence can be incredibly comforting.

  1. Offer Practical Help

Grief can make everyday tasks overwhelming. Offer to cook meals, run errands, or help with household chores. Small gestures like these relieve pressure and show that you genuinely care.

  1. Be Patient

Grieving takes time. Everyone processes loss differently, and there’s no set timeline. Don’t rush them or expect them to “move on.” Regular check-ins, even months later, show ongoing care and support.

  1. Respect Their Way of Mourning

Some people want to talk about the person they lost; others may withdraw. Let them grieve in their own way and respect their boundaries. Avoid clichés like “They’re in a better place,” which may not resonate with everyone.

  1. Encourage Professional Support if Needed

Sometimes grief can feel overwhelming. Suggest grief counselling, bereavement support groups, or professional grief help. This can be a gentle and caring way to guide someone through the grieving process.

  1. Remember Important Dates

Birthdays, anniversaries and holidays can be especially difficult. A thoughtful message or small gesture during these times reminds your loved one that they are not alone.

  1. Share Memories

Sharing happy memories or stories about the person who passed can provide comfort. It keeps the memory alive and can encourage meaningful conversations.

Supporting someone through grief is about compassion, patience and presence. Your small acts of kindness — listening, helping, or simply being there — can make a lasting difference during a very difficult time.

Easy Home-Style Lasagne Recipe

Serves: 4–6
Prep time: ±15 minutes
Cook time: ±40 minutes

Ingredients

  • 500 g beef mince

  • 1 onion, finely chopped

  • 1–2 cloves garlic (optional)

  • 1 tin (410 g) chopped tomatoes

  • 1 cup tomato pasta sauce (or tomato & onion mix)

  • Salt and black pepper

  • 1 tsp mixed herbs or Italian seasoning

  • Lasagne sheets (no need to pre-boil)

White sauce

  • 1 packet white sauce ( white onion soup or cheese sauce) powder

  • Milk (as per packet instructions)

Extras

  • 1–2 cups grated cheese (cheddar or mozzarella)

Method

  1. Make the mince sauce
Fry the onion in a little oil until soft. Add garlic (if using), then mince. Cook until browned.
Stir in chopped tomatoes, pasta sauce, herbs, salt and pepper. Simmer for 10 minutes.

  2. Prepare the white sauce
Make according to packet instructions. Keep it smooth and not too thick.

  3. Assemble the lasagne
    In an oven dish:

    • Layer mince sauce

    • Layer lasagne sheets

    • Spoon over white sauce
Repeat until finished, ending with white sauce on top.

  4. Add cheese
Sprinkle grated cheese over the top.

  5. Bake
Cover with foil and bake at 180°C for 25 minutes.
Remove foil and bake another 10–15 minutes until golden.

  6. Rest
Let it stand for 10 minutes before serving — it slices better.

Optional

  • Grated carrot or baby marrow into the mince

  • Use chicken mince instead of beef

  • Add a layer of spinach if you want extra goodness
